Blogging from Marathon, TX about birding, butterflies, moths and more. Exploring the gems of Brewster County, Post Park, Big Bend National Park and the surrounding region. Bird watching: Big Bend and beyond!
When I was growing up, us kids LIVED at the Post in the summer. It got cleaned out every year, all the reeds were removed. The underwater weeds also. The water was clear and deep, not a hazard to swim in. There was a diving board and dock, a cable swing. ALWAYS someone there swimming in the summer. Now our illustrious State Agricultural Commissioner (Susan Combs, whose grandfather deeded the land to the county for the express purpose of creating a park) won't let the locals keep the place clean because it's a wetland. What a crock. Now the weeds make it impossible to swim, they catch trash that can't be retrieved, they restrict the flow of water which creates large fish kills, the water stinks now as a result. It's beautiful at first, but when I think about the way it used to be, my heart just breaks.
